Happy Summer!  Even though it is not technically summer yet according to the calendar, school is out around here, which means summer is upon us!  Now maybe we get to enjoy less chaotic schedules, longer days, the pool or lake, and generally less structured days.

As the temps rise, so should our water intake.  Did you know that you should be drinking about 1/2 your body weight in ounces each day?  If you are exercising or working outdoors, you should drink even more than that.  That may seem like a lot, and it does mean that you will visit the restroom wherever you go, but the benefits outweigh the work involved.  :)

Some of the benefits of water include:

  • lubricating joints.
  • delivering oxygen through your bloodstream. (Blood is more than 90% water!)
  • aiding in digestion and flushing body waste.
  • helping to maintain blood pressure.
  • boosting performance during exercise.
  • helping to control weight (if you drink water instead of sweet tea, alcohol or soda).
  • boosting skin health.

Here are a few tips to help you increase your water intake this summer:
  1. Get a pretty bottle or thermos if you don't already have one.  It sounds silly, but if you like the way it looks and it keeps the water at your desired temperature, you are more likely to drink.  I have a favorite Swell bottle covered in stickers that my daughter made.  I love it.  It holds 16 ounces when I add ice, so it is easy for me to keep track of how many ounces I have had.
  2. Pour a glass of water as soon as you get up.  I fix 16 ounces with my first cup of coffee and I don't allow myself my standard second cup of coffee until I have finished my water.
  3. Every time you get in the car, take a water with you.  Challenge yourself to finish it by the time you get to your destination or back home, depending on the length of the trip.
  4. Drink water like it's your job.  Don't take cute little sips.  While your lips are on the glass or bottle anyway, get to chuggin'!  (Within reason, of course.)
  5. Squeeze a little lemon into your water or add some fruit or fresh mint.
Let me know if you have a hydration hack you want to share!

Cheers to a hydrated summer! 🥤🥤
